Where and how do you start on your healing journey?
Many people looking for holistic healing methods, have either been sick for an extended period of time, unable to find solutions, or they have experienced some kind of triggering event or trauma – something that has pushed their body over the edge, so to speak, and resulted in a rapid breakdown in their health.
We all experience traumatic instances, many of which can occur during childhood, at a time when we do not know how to express or work through them. These events can be hurtful and painful and when we don’t know how to or don’t get the opportunity to express them, our hurt or pain can become lingering trauma.
Over the years, our bodies store more and more events that we didn’t resolve for whatever reason and these lingering traumas have a compounding negative effect on our bodies. We are also constantly bombarded by toxins in our environment, sometimes we have poor quality water or air and maybe not enough unprocessed and nutritious food. The combination of these things, leads to our bodies to become inundated and unable to function properly. Our immune systems become overburdened and this is when we start to experience symptoms.
Symptoms are the way in which our body tries to signal to us that something is not working as it should and we might need to take some action in order for our bodies to be able to return to balance. If we just try to treat the presenting symptoms by suppressing them with medication, the body will often then present a different symptom and we might witness a downward spiral in our health where we need to take more and more medications and we just get sicker and sicker. For many of us, by the time we realise that we are seriously or chronically ill, it has been building and building in our bodies for a long time, maybe even decades.
Do not despair as there is hope. No matter how long you might have been sick for, it can often be reversed in the right environment and given the right conditions! Obviously, each of us are unique and each of us will have a different story and perspectives based on our life experiences and our beliefs.
1 – Try to walk for 30 minutes outside every day. Early in the day before the sun is too strong is best. Just doing this one thing will increase Vitamin D levels, Vitamin D is a hormone that corrects and gives information to all the cells in your body and increases your immune system. Walking briskly will bring movement to your lymphatic system, which is a critical drainage system for the whole body that carries out cellular and bodily waste and toxins. The lymphatic system helps regulate fluid balance, immune health and more. If necessary, start with a shorter walk at first and increase each day until you can manage 30 minutes.
2 – Hydrate with clean water. In Australia, tap water is often full of chemicals. Try, where possible, to drink filtered water out of a glass, instead of a plastic container. A good guide is to aim for 1 litre of water per 22Kgs of body weight, for example if you weigh 66Kgs then aim to drink 3 litres of water each day in order to be well hydrated. Of course this will vary depending on your activity levels, if you are doing sports or are out in the sun then you might require more than this.
3 – Be kind to yourself! Know that if you are reading this and seeking more information, then you have already begun on the path to better health!!
